Jan (Franciszek Trzeciak) and Maria (Anna Nieborowska) become a couple in 1930s Kraków.
Jan tries to get a job as an architect but fails.
They struggle with poverty and extreme humiliation.
Their attempt to survive leads to a desperate crime.
