His UK Top Ten 45 'Gaye' had projected the reclusive singer-songwriter into the spotlight, in which he was never comfortable.
There is no doubt Ward's reluctance to tour affected his career and in 1987 he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis; after a long battle with the disease, he died in 2001 at the age of 57.
